Always Verify Before You Pay
Before making any payments, providing banking details, or doing anything else that may compromise your business bank account, always verify the recipient.
Business Email Compromise & Wire Fraud
Criminals impersonate an executive, vendor, or attorney via spoofed or hacked email accounts to trick employees into wiring money to accounts the fraudsters control.
Check Fraud
Criminals steal checks from the mail, chemically "wash" them to alter the payee or amount, or they use your account and routing numbers to create counterfeit checks drawn on your business account.
Fake Invoices & Vendor Payment Changes
Scammers send invoices that look like they're from legitimate suppliers or pose as a real vendor requesting "updated" banking details, so your payments get rerouted to them.
Payroll Diversion
Fraudsters impersonate an employee (often through a phishing email to HR) and request a change to their direct deposit information, sending that person's paycheck to a criminal-controlled account.

AI Voice Cloning
How it Works: Using AI technology, scammers will impersonate real people to request money, often claiming there has been an accident or other type of emergency.
What to Do: Create a code word with friends and relatives to use in the event of a real emergency, so you can quickly verify whether the call is real. Alternatively, hang up and call the person back at a trusted phone number.
ATM and Gas-Pump Skimming
How it Works: Devices are attached to ATMs, gas pumps, and other card readers to copy your card data and collect your PIN.
What to Do: Look for tamper seals on gas pumps, inspect the card reader for signs of damage, and cover your hand when entering your PIN. When in doubt, pay inside the gas station or go into your local bank branch to complete transactions.
Bank Impersonators
How it Works: Someone will call you claiming to be from West Texas National Bank. They might tell you your account has been compromised, ask for personal information, or tell you to move your money.
What to Do: Do not provide any personal information and hang up immediately. Then, contact us at 877-493-7862 to secure your account.
Check Fraud and Mail Theft
How it Works: Thieves will steal checks from mailboxes and alter the payee or amount to make fraudulent deposits.
What to Do: Make digital payments where possible using Online Bill Pay. If you do put a check in the mail, drop it off inside your local post office rather than a residential mailbox or blue collection box.
Crypto Investment Scams
How it Works: Fraudsters will promise big returns through investments, usually through unsolicited contact on social media or with fake websites.
What to Do: Do not send cryptocurrency to any unknown parties; it’s almost impossible to recover. You should also always verify any investment platform to ensure it is authorized to manage your funds.
Online Shopping Scams
How it Works: Scammers will set up fake store fronts and use social media ads to promote non-existent goods and services.
What to Do: Double check URLs and look for misspelled brand names, offers that seem too good to be true, or requests for unusual payment methods.
Payment App Scams
How it Works: There are a few different scams that use payment apps like Zelle. A common one is a scammer will spoof the bank’s phone number and call or text you with instructions to transfer money to a “safe account”.
What to Do: Do not transfer money to anyone you don’t know. Zelle transfers are like cash, so funds cannot be recovered. We will never ask you to transfer money to protect your account.
Phishing Texts and Emails
How it Works: Scammers will impersonate a trustworthy organization, such as your bank, and send a text or email and request that you click on a link to reset your account or send sensitive information like passwords or verification codes.
What to Do: Do not click on any suspicious links or open any attachments and mark the messages as spam. If you think an alert may be legitimate, call us to check or log into Online or Mobile Banking.
